Elasticity

The paper is brittle, the edges are frayed,

where all of his towers and bridges were laid.

I gathered the rolls in a desperate stack,

but the loop was too tired and started to crack.

A sudden report like a shot in the hall,

and sulfurous rubber began its slow fall.

A line on my wrist, a hot, rising pink,

more heavy than any old blueprint or ink.
