Sectional

The handle is cold,

and the first bite is a sound

closer to a groan than a cut.

The pine resists.

It’s too wide for the stairs,

so I have to make two things

out of one.

By the time I’m through,

my hands are humming.

The pale, blonde dust

has settled into the cracks

of the floor like snow

that will never melt.
