Engine Idling

The vent is still blowing a thin, lukewarm air,

while I sit in the dark with my hands in my hair.

The CVS sign is a buzzing of red,

as I try to find space for the thoughts in my head.

A cart hits the curb with a rattle and thud,

near a patch of the lawn that has turned into mud.

I’m staring at lines on the asphalt below,

where the yellow has faded and started to go.

I can’t find the strength to go home and be me,

so I’ll stay in the lot for as long as I’m free.
