Setting for Two

The pasta is steaming in the colander

and my left hand is already ahead of my head.

I’ve got the cupboard open.

I’ve got the blue bowl in my thumb's grip

before I remember the shelf is mostly empty now.

The weight of two plates feels balanced

until the kitchen goes quiet.

My fingers won't listen to the calendar.

They just want to hold what they’ve always held.
