Sweet Solitude

Rain on the window, a sweet syrup of sound,

I sat in a café, crumbs scattered around.

A slice of cake on a porcelain plate,

its sweetness tasted both right and so wrong,

wrapped in the taste of my solitude—

   Couples huddled close, umbrellas unfurl,

I forked through the layers, a solitary whirl,

the reflection of loneliness shimmering bright,

as I savored each bite, alone with my thoughts,

this feast, a secret, the heart of the night.
