Skin Deep

Lobster-red, across the back.

That boardwalk kid,

skin peeling, a loose track.

I felt what I did.

Phantom ache, old fire,

from years ago, a sting.

Sheets felt like wire,

every touch, a thing.

Vinegar, salt, the sun's cruel bake.

No shirt could quite hide.

A mistake for memory's sake,

a burn deep inside.
