House Sounds

The streetlamp squares

on the bedroom wall. Yellow, still.

My own breath, loud.

A floorboard sighs

downstairs. Not a foot, just wood

letting go of heat.

Outside, a dog barks once.

Then nothing. Only the house

holding its own air.

I checked the locks again.

Small clicks, firm. The world

felt too large, then just large enough.
