Cooking for one

The fridge stands open, its shelves bare and stark,

a hunger ignites, a solitary spark.

I gather the scraps, each slice of despair,

knowing tonight,

I’ll learn how to care.

The knife gleams dull under flickering light,

as I chop and I mix,

transforming the night.

No hands to help me,

a quiet resolve,

as the steam fills the air,

new flavors evolve.
