A Thermometer

I reached for the oven, its dial a blank stare,

searching for warmth in the cold, stagnant air.

Cookies waited, like dreams on a shelf,

but I fumbled with gauges, unsure of myself.

Mom knew the secrets, a pinch and a turn,

while I wrestled with numbers, a lesson to learn.

The world feels so vast when you’re lost in the heat,

a simple desire to create something sweet.
