The fence we built

I walked past the fence, its paint chipped and gray,

a barrier now, where we used to play.

Voices of neighbors rose up in the night,

as if arguments could just take flight.

Splintered wood creaks, a reminder of tears,

a monument now to our tangled years.

How did we let distance grow wider each day,

as we whispered our secrets, then kept them at bay?
