Sinking Under

The city’s heartbeat, a thrum beneath my skin,

each step blends into the last, a murky gray,

shadows fade in the rush of feet,

I nearly miss my train, caught in the fray.

A bottle sinks, shattering on the water’s surface,

every reflection breaks apart,

as I slip further under, drowning in noise,

a cacophony that drowns my heart.

The faces, a blur, I reach out, but grasp

nothing but the chill of an empty space—

I wonder if silence would drown out

the relentless tide, this hollow race.
