Checkout Encounters

In the grocery store line, the chatter erupts,

a mother scolds gently, her patience corrupts.

Candy bars beckon with colors so bold,

yet stories of sugar hide truths to be told.

I hear little voices, the warmth in their fears,

reminding me softly of simpler years.

The urge for connection wrapped up in our wants,

and I stand feeling lonely, surrounded by haunts.
