Cleaning out the back

Cleaning out the back.

The drawer I never open.

Behind the old mail.

A wooden spoon.

The handle, softened.

Not by water, not by heat.

But by teeth.

Small indentations.

Like a rodent’s nibble.

Whose was it?

Did they just chew?

When they were bored?

Or angry?

It feels strange.

To hold this.

A thing that remembers.

A mouth that isn't mine.
