Pale Shells

The fluorescent hum.

Aisle seven.

The plastic carton.

Pale shells, a dozen.

The price tag stared.

A number I couldn't believe.

Like a mistake,

or a bad joke.

I stood there,

the thin plastic cool against my fingers.

Wondering how much

a simple thing

had decided to cost.
