Pretty Smile

The steam rose up, a thin white ghost.

She handed me the cup.

Said, "You have such a pretty smile."

I turned my head up,

away. The chipped ceramic rim

showed a brown line, thin.

It felt like something grim,

like that’s where the cracks begin.

I didn’t say thank you.

Just took the mug. What else to do?
