The Jawline

The dog tucked his tail and slid to the floor

when I used that voice near the kitchen door.

It wasn't my voice; it was heavy and dry,

a sound like a hammer, a reason to cry.

I saw the hallway mirror and stopped in the light,

his ghost in my jawline, holding me tight.

I’m punching a new hole in the leather tonight.
