Pavement Static

I thought it was a mitten someone dropped

until I saw the eye, and the world just stopped.

The train is screaming two blocks away,

but this heap of gray has nothing to say.

Ants are mapping the iridescent edge,

dragging the life off the concrete ledge.

I’m late.

The bird doesn't care.
