Clearance

My phone took a dive behind the headboard

and I had to clear out the dust bunnies.

I’m face-down on the hardwood,

reaching into the dark where the air is stale.

My fingers hit something soft—

a canvas sneaker, caked in grey fuzz.

I thought I threw the pair out

the week she finally moved her stuff.

I pulled it out and just sat there,

holding a shoe that doesn't fit anyone

left in this house.
