I had to dig through the gas bills

I had to dig through the gas bills

to find the card for the local vet.

I peeled back the note from my sister,

a thing I keep trying to forget.

The tape is brown and snaps like a bone.

The fridge door has a yellow stain

where the paper used to be.

It’s funny how the shadow stays

long after the paper is gone.
