Line Item

She says the skin was dry,

poking at the carcass with a plastic fork.

The line is six people deep now

and the cashier looks like he’s about to cry.

I’m holding a gallon of drain cleaner.

The weight of it is making my pulse throb

against the plastic handle.

The red laser of the scanner

flicks across the back of my hand,

a tiny, steady target.
