Short Circuit

I couldn't find the end of the string.

It was a bird's nest of green wire

stuffed into a plastic tub.

I pulled, and when it didn't give,

I just yanked until the copper showed through.

The snap was louder than I expected.

Now there’s a single bulb crushed

into a fine white powder on the rug.

I’m kneeling here, looking at the mess,

wondering why I’m always so angry.
