Accumulation

Flat on the rug,

waiting for the pop in my spine,

I see the four white arms

stalled against the plaster.

A thick felt of gray

hangs off the leading edge,

a winter coat of skin and lint

I’ve let grow since June.

When I cough, a heavy clump

breaks rank and drifts,

landing right on my open eye.
