Copper Underfoot

A penny lies crushed beneath damp leaves,

its dull copper skin bruised and cold.

A kid stomps through, sending wet decay

spiraling like ghosts in muddy air.

The edges bite into cracked concrete,

quiet and stubborn as the day ending.

I stoop, fingers brushing the cold round,

a coin forgotten, but still holding weight.
