Edge of Tears

I stood there, steam clinging to the glass,

my heart in a chokehold, pressure rising slow.

A friend’s voice on the line, just a query to pass,

but how could I tell them? I didn’t even know.

The silence stretches thin, a thin veil drawn tight,

a single tear’s weight hangs, but I keep it at bay.

Like fogged-over windows on a dark, dreary night,

I blur out my fears, but they won’t fade away.
