Drawer Pull

I had to find a certain cord,

to charge some small device.

The drawer, a jumbled, messy hoard,

was far from neat and nice.

I pulled the handle, yanked it out,

a tangled, plastic heap.

Old batteries, beyond a doubt,

and pens that would not keep.

A rubber band, a single key,

a staple remover, bent.

All waiting there for you and me,

on what they might have meant.
