The cloying scent drifts back

The cloying scent drifts back,

a whiff of cherry, sticky sweet,

a spoon abandoned, a reluctant pact,

mom's worried gaze, a childhood defeat.

Each sip held the promise of relief,

a bitter truth wrapped in sticky lies,

tasting childhood, the lingering grief,

as my small body aches with uncried sighs.
