Scraps and feathers

They cluster on cracked concrete,

gray wings flapping,

a small war over crumbs.

One clumsy bird pecks,

then flinches as others chase it away,

feathers ruffle like loose skin.

The fight for scraps—

a quiet cruelty

in the morning chill.
