Carbon

The neighbor is grilling something tough,

and the smoke drags across my floor.

I’m scrubbing at a sleeve with a cuff

that I ruined the night before.

I tried to build a fire in the yard

but the wood was wet and the wind was mean.

Now there’s a smudge, a black disregard

for the shirt being halfway clean.
