Flicker

The transformer blew and the world went out.

I found the plastic torch in the kitchen bin.

It gave a weak yellow sigh, a flicker of doubt,

before the darkness started pressing back in.

I shook the casing to wake up the spark,

but the beam only shrank to a dull, orange eye.

I’m standing alone in the middle of the dark

watching the last of the chemical light die.
