Yesterday I sat in the DMV feeling out of place

Yesterday, I sat in the DMV, feeling out of place,

her eyes scanned my photo, a ghost of who I was,

a stranger grinning back under stark fluorescent lights,

and the gap between us widened like the years.

With every click, I tried to bridge that distance,

but the face I showed was a flimsy charade,

a marker of time, the page of a passport,

while I was still here, lost in the waiting room haze.
