Empty Expectations

I stood at the curb, heart full of hope,

that maybe today I would find the right rope

to pull me from shadows where silence has seeped,

but the mailbox sighed, where my wishes lay steeped.

The rusted hinge creaked, echoing dismay,

just like a promise that didn’t stay.

Inside, all I found was an emptiness wide,

mocking my yearning, my mail still denied.
